Repealed old Chapter 18 and adopted the 2021 I-Codes and 2020 NEC.
Ordinance No. 1163 (Bill 2026/01.01), enacted February 24, 2026. Ava is a fourth-class city; RSMo 71.940 authorizes revision of general ordinances.
The ordinance repealed all of Chapter 18 and enacted a new Chapter 18. It notes the International Codes were last adopted in 2014 and updates them to the 2021 family (NEC 2020).

• Sec. 18-54 NEC 2020. Ava does not allow electric wiring under #12 AWG.
• Sec. 18-55 IPC 2021. Backwater valve required on the sewer service line where the code calls for it.
• Sec. 18-56 IMC 2021.
• Sec. 18-57 IFC 2021.
• Sec. 18-60 IEBC 2021.
The City Clerk keeps one copy of each adopted construction code on file in perpetuity.
Permit process (from the Building Department commercial / residential handouts, revision 03/06/2026):
• Two tracks: one- and two-family residential, and multifamily/commercial.
• Applications: Residential Permit, Commercial Building Permit, Foundation Only, Excavation, Miscellaneous, Sign, Certificate of Occupancy.
• Fees include permit, utility connect, and plan review.
• Governing ordinances override the handout if they conflict.
